Barts has good success rates
Barts always makes this kind of administrative mistakes. I had my first IVF cycle at Barts - failed of course. They got my down regulation dates wrong, they lost my notes and found them again, they arranged an appointment and when I came in, they told me the booking system was down so all appointment that day had been cancelled with about a dozen people went there in vain. So I changed clinic - please double-check with everything they do, and take good control for yourself.
I'm afraid I have also heard similar stories from a colleague having treatment or (not very quickly having treatment) there. One thing I have learnt is that you need to shout and jump and be on their case or you don't get anywhere - that is just the way it is and don't take it personally.

Not all patients are eligible for NHS funded fertility treatment. To qualify for NHS funded treatment you will need to meet the criteria specified by your Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). Your CCG depends on the area in which your registered GP is located. Patients in north east London referred to St Bartholomew’s Hospital for fertility treatment will need to meet the criteria of either the north east London Strategic Health Authority (NELSHA). You must fulfil the criteria at the start of each cycle of treatment you undertake.
If you do not meet the criteria for NHS funding, you have the option to self fund your treatment. If you wish to undertake self funded treatment, we still require a referral letter from your GP or consultant. Once the referral is received we will send you a self fund pack which includes a pricelist and a paying patient agreement form. Once we have received the completed agreement form from, an invoice will be raised and you will be issued with an appointment.

I've had one IUI before and am going in for another IUI tomorrow. It's similar to a pap test in feeling, it takes just a couple of seconds for the dr to insert it, then they have you lay in the room for another 15-20 minutes to give the little swimmers a chance to make it. It's not painful but I had a couple hours of mild cramping afterwards, nothing bad. They should be doing an ultrasound and bloodwork first to confirm you're ovulating or have follicles ready to release - if you have multiple follicles the IUI could potentially increase your odds of conceiving this cycle by 10-15% - definitely not a 100% guarantee but it does up the odds a little!
I have one friend who had success after one IUI but others have taken 5 or more cycles, i guess it all depends on your diagnosis (and your spouses!). Good luck, stay positive and hang in there!
I used IUI and injectables. I started in Feb '08 and got pregnant in May. The baby did not develop and I had a miscarriage the follwing month. We started again afte my body healed and I got pregnant in October '08 with twin boys. They were early, but no one said it had to do with the injectables. I will tell you it's a long, difficult, and quite honestly painful process at times. You have to have a lot of flexibility in your schedule (to meet appt requirenents) annd be okay with repeated blood draws, daily injections in your stomach, and extremely painful periods. I would be happy to tell you a little more about my experence. At the end of it, I would do it all over again for the joy of being a mom.
: It took 8 cycles of timed IUI with injectibles FSH and trigger shots before I became pregnant. Our last IUI, our doctor gave us about 8% chance of conceiving and it was suppose to be our last one before moving to IVF. I think the general success rater for IUI hovers in the 12-19% per cycle, and chances go down after 4-6 unsuccessful IUI. I became pregnant with triplets that last cycle.
One of my friends went through IUI three times, and had a singleton. Her sister-in-law had 4 IUIs and also had a singleton, and another friend of mine had 1 IUI and had triplets. As you can see the success rate varies wildly.
I had annovulation but we had not male infertility factor. I would think that you may be better off doing IVF with mail infertility factor, specifically the ICSI procedure.
It was very successful for my husband and I. For us, its the female factor. I have a diminishing egg reserve so I had to take injectable meds to stimulate my ovaries. I was only producing like 2 or 3 eggs at a time but it worked on our 3rd try. We were very lucky. With my current pregnancy, we went back to start up with our RE knowing what the problem was. He put me on a high dosage this time and I produced 4 follicles. The IUI failed that month and he told me to take a break the following month to give my ovaries time to replenish themselves. We ended up conceiving naturally during that one month break!
We had great success with IUI and meds. My husband's sperm count was fine, I was the problem. I'm not sure how successful you will be with male infertility factor but if your doctor is recommending IUI then it can't be totally impossible.

You go back and they to another ultrasound to make sure you have a follicle that is about ready to release. Sometimes you take a trigger shot. You go in 36 hour after trigger shot and have the IUI.
The IUI itself - you bring in a sample from your hubby. They "wash" it to remove everything but sperm. You lay back in chair, speculum goes in, they have a small plastic catheter they feed in through the cervix and shoot the sperm in. They put it right next to the fallopian tubes. Dont worry, you can barely feel it. Nothing to get stressed about. They leave you in the chair for about 15 minutes to let the guys go swimming upward.
You can do it only one day or come back the next for another round.
